Google Knocked By Another Financial Analyst
Share |

Google is not having the best possible week.  Yesterday, an analyst representing J.P. Morgan cut his price target on the company's stock by $73, and today, an analyst with Oppenheimer followed suit, actually cutting his price target by an even-more-dramatic $115.

Not all is lost.  Jason Helfstein still feels Google's doing well in the U.S., and even believes the company deserves an "outperform" rating, which is about as good as it gets.

Also, people who have invested in Google can't complain about the company's performance on the stock market today, given that shares rose 1.41 percent.

Here's what Eric Savitz wrote about Helfstein's overall forecast, though: "Helfstein cuts his 2010 pro forma EPS outlook to $27.39, from $28.48; for 2011, he now sees $31.50, down from $33.34, and for 2012 he goes to $36, from $39."

And those, viewed together with the price target chop, are some fairly significant reductions.

It might be wise for everyone not to get their hopes up in advance of Google's second quarter earnings report, which is scheduled for next week, then.  Or maybe Google will pull off one of its semi-routine miracles and just wow us more than usual.

What You Won't Learn in Bschool

Business school can help you when working for or running an already established business, but it can’t provide you with the real world experience needed to run a start-up or pursue entrepreneurship. More and more, MBA curriculums are being distinguished as training and networking grounds for upcoming entrepreneurs. Being sharp enough to face the challenges of running a company can be merciless, particularly in this high tech, fast paced territory. Because getting ahead in business frequently has nothing to do with qualifications or exceeding a set of specific goals, here are some cutting edge blogs that will help you win at the business game and expand the horizons of your education.

Cutting Edge Business Blogs for Productivity

It takes a disciplined personality to set accountable actions in order to become a successful individual. Acquire some helpful productivity skills that you couldn’t learn in business school from these blogs.

    YouTube Cofounder Discusses Site's Future
    Share |

As big and popular as it is, YouTube could probably engage cruise control (in terms of feature releases, design updates, and so forth) and stay in front of the video-sharing competition for at least a couple of years.  Cofounder Chad Hurley was interviewed onstage at LeWeb '09, and that isn't at all what he has in mind, however.

Reducing the amount of time it takes to find something other than a song you don't like or an annoying kid is one priority.  "What we're very focused on right now is content discovery technology and how to make the finding great videos easier for users, based on their profile and past usage," said Hurley according to Robin Wauters.

Also, Hurley continued, "We're pleased with the mobile content consumption side of the equation, but I'll be the first to acknowledge that we need to work on making uploading through mobile devices far better."

As for what won't get a lot of attention, it doesn't look like live video is going to be a big focus.  Hurley spoke about it in uncertain terms, only allowing for the possibility of once-a-month live streaming events in the near future.  And social features won't come flying out of the woodwork, either.

So look for a smarter and more accessible YouTube to evolve over time.  Just don't count on seeing any completely new stuff popping up soon.

AP Extends Digital Strategy With Gateway Unit
    Share |

A news organization that was founded in 1846 is making another attempt to transition to the digital age.  The Associated Press has announced the creation of a unit called AP Gateway, and with the unit, the agency intends to "facilitate development of fresh news consumer experiences for the Web as well as mobile phones, tablets and e-readers."

This is meant to be truly cutting-edge stuff.  For example: it's already been decided that one of the first products out of AP Gateway will be an iPad app, even though the iPad hasn't launched yet.  Other in-development and new devices are supposed to be in the business unit's sights, too.

Then one other important aspect of this move is the fact that "different" AP Gateway apps won't just have been altered to account for screens of various sizes.  Tom Curley, president and CEO of the Associated Press, said in a statement, "Rather than just repurpose our content across formats, we now have a real opportunity to innovate and create differentiated experiences of the news across formats that will excite all of us, from producers to consumers of news."

It sounds like the AP's trying hard to adapt.

We'll see how things go as AP Gateway comes out of the figurative gate.  The 200-plus newspapers participating in the AP's News Registry service will have the option of becoming involved, so it may get off to quite a start.
